Assumptions

What does it mean to assume

To place your thoughts on someone you don’t know

To mock someone whom

Has a story that they might not always show

When did we learn to judge so harshly

To see only what we want to see

To make of others what we want them to be

Regardless of who they are or what they’re feeling

A man shakes a can on the side of the road

A sign in his hand shaking from the cold

All he wants is a warm bed and hot meal

To see a glimmer of happiness in his ordeal

But we assume he is a liar and an addict

No trial for this man we immediately cast the verdict

Condemn him to starvation as we drive right by

The man sees your scorn and can only cry

What does it mean to assume

To place thoughts on someone you don’t know

To mock someone whose

Has a story that they might not always show

When did we learn to judge so harshly
